Junk 2 Funk!

Jeff Erwin and Skip Brunette of Trashcan Lid Productions, both incredibly talented teacher/musicians, brought some incredible rockin’ fun as artists in residence for a special session of Junk 2 Funk on December 7 2016 to the students at GymNation.

This one of a kind program blends rhythmic percussion music with the concept of re-purposing everyday items into instruments, including barrels, recycled washer drums, metal and plastic pipes, and more.

The goal is to introduce the kids to trying music in a non-threatening way. “There’s no right or wrong way to play a bucket, barrel, pots and pans!” says Jeff. The kids were also led in songs such as “My Own Two Hands,” by Skip. The message encourages the students that they can create a better world through the ideas of respect for others and the environment, and gain confidence as they learn and grow. They learned about the importance of sharing time with others, and even participated in a group thunderstorm simulation!

The kids were delighted when they were encouraged to join the fun and play along with Jeff and Skip. What a treat it was to have these guest artists come and join us. We hope to invite them back soon for another blast session of Junk 2 Funk!
